J.R.R. Tolkien – The Silmarillion, Signed Deluxe Limited Edition (1998)
Published by Harper Collins, London, 1998 – Signed & Numbered First Edition
Illustrated by Ted Nasmith, Edited by Christopher Tolkien
This deluxe collector’s edition of The Silmarillion was published in 1998 by Harper Collins to celebrate the centenary of J.R.R. Tolkien’s birth. It is one of only 500 numbered copies, each signed by both Christopher Tolkien and Ted Nasmith. This is copy number 185 of 500.
Bound in quarter leather and cloth in deep red and terra cotta, with gilt titling and Tolkien's monogram on both the book and matching slipcase. Includes gilded page edges, ribbon marker, and full-page color plates by Ted Nasmith.
Condition: This copy is in Very Good condition overall, but with a few imperfections to note:
Book: The interior is clean and appears unread. The signed limitation page is immaculate, with bold, clean signatures from both contributors. The top corner of the front board is lightly bumped, and there is a loose fabric thread visible at the top edge of the front cover near the leather spine. Gilt edges are bright with minimal handling marks.
Slipcase: Structurally sound but shows mild rubbing and several small white specks on the cloth surface, particularly to the front and back panels. No splitting or fraying, but some shelfwear visible, especially on the bottom and open edge.
A visually striking edition and still highly collectible despite its minor flaws. Matched in design with Harper Collins deluxe editions of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
One of only 500 copies signed by Christopher Tolkien and Ted Nasmith – an essential item for collectors of Tolkien’s legendarium.
