This is the first impression of Oxford Poetry 1915, a rare and highly collectible anthology containing early poems by several prominent authors, most notably J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by B.H. Blackwell, this edition features Tolkien's first significant published poem, "Goblin Feet," which appears on pages 64-65. The anthology also includes contributions from Dorothy L. Sayers and Aldous Huxley, marking it as an important piece of literary history from this period.
This first impression, issued in December 1915, is one of 850 copies printed. Later impressions followed in January 1916 and August 1916, but they are clearly marked on the label of the upper cover, unlike this copy, which is believed to be a true first impression.
The book retains its original blue wrappers with printed labels on the front cover and spine. The binding is tight, though it shows some wear along the edges, typical for a paperback of this age. The pages are clean overall, with some light foxing present on the title page and scattered throughout.
Tolkien's "Goblin Feet" has been reprinted in The Annotated Hobbit and partially in Carpenter's Biography, making this edition particularly valuable to collectors of early Tolkien works. This copy is an excellent example of a scarce first edition, ideal for any serious collector of Tolkieniana or early 20th-century poetry.
A highly desirable collectible for Tolkien enthusiasts and those interested in early 20th-century literature.
