Dutch Edition of ‘De Hobbit of daarheen en weer terug’ by Max Schuchart, Utrecht/Antwerpen: Het Spectrum.


This vintage Dutch edition of De Hobbit brings J.R.R. Tolkien’s beloved classic to life in a uniquely illustrated edition by Cees Kelfkens, featuring whimsical and stylized dwarves and Bilbo on a vibrant pink background. Part of Prisma’s popular series and numbered as issue 529, this 11th printing is based on the 7th printing of The Hobbit by Allen & Unwin, published in 1955.

The condition of this copy reflects moderate handling and aging. The spine shows light creasing, consistent with prior readings, along with slight rubbing and minor discoloration along the edges. Despite these signs of wear, the cover illustration retains its original charm without major flaws. The pages have yellowed due to age but are clean and free from markings, inscriptions, or tears, making it a well-preserved copy for its age.

This edition includes the iconic maps created by Tolkien: Thrors kaart (Thror’s Map) and Wilderland, with place names beautifully translated into Dutch while retaining Tolkien’s distinctive calligraphic style.

At the end, seven unnumbered pages provide commentary on The Lord of the Rings along with a Dutch translation of a fragment from The Breaking of the Fellowship, offering additional insight into Tolkien’s epic universe for Dutch readers.
