The Hobbit – 2001 Houghton Mifflin Review Copy with Peter Sís Cover Art
J.R.R. Tolkien. First printing of this edition for young readers, with the publisher’s review slip.
Published by Houghton Mifflin in 2001, this hardcover edition has a complete number line ending in 1. The copyright page identifies it as an edition for young readers and credits Douglas A. Anderson for the Note on the Text. ISBN 0-618-16221-6.
Peter Sís created the colourful wraparound dust-jacket artwork, explicitly credited on the flaps as cover art. This should not be confused with an edition containing a new suite of interior illustrations by Sís. Tolkien’s map and dragon device are visible in the photographs.
The yellow Houghton Mifflin Children’s Book Department review slip is included, giving an October 2001 publication date and details of the hardcover and paperback issues. The book is bound in black, with gilt spine lettering and a gilt Tolkien monogram on the front board. The unclipped jacket retains its printed $18.00 price.
The jacket remains bright but shows surface rubbing and creasing along the upper edges, particularly at the head of the spine, with a small scuffed area on the rear upper edge. The binding has light wear at the extremities. The photographed endpapers and text leaves appear clean, with some natural cream toning; the photographs are not a full collation.
An attractive review copy pairing Peter Sís’s distinctive cover art with the publisher’s original publicity slip.
