The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, by J.R.R. Tolkien.
Published in 1938 by Houghton Mifflin of Boston and New York.
A wonderful copy of an extremely collectable book, housed in it's very own custom made full Black leather clamshell case, featuring to the front boards, in gilt, the Bowing Hobbit and title.
To the spine, in gilt, a Dwarves Hat, Title, Author, Publisher and date in compartments with raised bands. This is the 1st Edition, 1st Impression, 1st State, with the Bowing Hobbit on the title page, and is one of the very rare copies with the variant ribbed cloth. The maps are bound opposite to the order of the List of Illustrations, as per Hammond and Anderson. Chapter VII header is uncorrected and reads as 'Chapter VI'
This book features the 4 color and 9 black and white illustrations by Tolkien, all of which are present and in extremely clean and bright condition. There are no names or writing in the book.
The text block and maps are also very clean and bright, with a little darkening to the gutter of the maps.
The text block is tight with no loose pages or any separation from the binding.
The original cloth shows virtually no shelf wear to the edges, a couple of bumped corners, some rust or foxing stains to the folds of the cloth covered boards and some to the spine as well.
Housed in a facsimile of the very rare original dustjacket, covered with removable mylar protector.
Digital photo's available, inquire if interested.
